"The brainchild of former U.S. Air Force pilot and current American Airlines first officer Richard Maurer, AquaVenture WaterCrafts is working on a personal submarine that is affordable for most schools, research institutions and moderately high net worth individuals, by replacing an engine with a towing cable. When towed behind a surface craft, the SeaBird can achieve speeds of up to 25 miles per hour under water and dive within seconds to a depth of 150 feet. The system can be customized with a number of options, including sonar and thrusters to allow it to hover even if the tow boat is not moving (otherwise the buoyant SeaBird will simply bob to the surface).
